Epidemiological Study on Eye Injuries in Industrial Accidents

Abstract
This epidemiological study was performed on 194 cases of industrial eye injuries which occurred in the establishments in Kwangju area from Jan. 1982 to Dec. 1983. Comparing the relationships among the worker¡¯s individual variables, accident variables, wound-finding variables and treatment variables performed the study. The results were as following.
1) The incidence rate of eye injuries among all industrial injuries was 3.5 and that of the permanently disabled among eye injuries was 10.3%.
2) Forty seven percent of the eye injuries were those, which occurred in construction establishments, 73% of cases, were those with employment term of 1 year or less and, in the construction establishments, 92% of cases were those with 1 year or less.
3) Flying particles, among which 53% were by metal pieces, caused Fifty six per cent of the cases and 35% were injured during work without eye protection devices.
4) Sixty per cent of the cases were those of right eyes and 35%, left eye and among 320 regional findings, the cornea injuries were the most frequent sites (133) and 162 cases were nonpenetrating ones. The cases without co-injury at the other part of the body were 161 ones and those with were 33 ones.
5) Twenty two per cent of the cases were delayed 2 days or more for the first aids and the most frequent medical institutes for the first aid were ophthalmologist¢¥s clinics (68%). The mean of the days required for treatment was 38 days and the longest, 234 days.
6) Among 20 cases of permanently disabled, 8 ones occurred in the construction establishments and 17 ones were first-aided by ophthalmologist and 2 ones by non-ophthalmologist.
